The University's Continuing Dental Education (CDE) program provides specialized education and certification programs to postgraduate dentists, dental hygienists, dental assistants and dental laboratory technicians. Continuing Dental Education's vision is to learn, teach, and facilitate life-long learning in order to improve dental professional competence and dental care outcomes for practicing professionals. Our mission is to provide a variety of programs that will meet the needs of our participants through the use of appropriate methods, training and materials. Using innovative, evidence-based educational activities, we develop, provide and evaluate learning opportunities and resources and as result, our CDE participants are better able to meet their own professional development requirements.

With a variety of hands-on and lecture based courses such as the IV Conscious Sedation program, the Local Anaesthetic Course for Dental Hygienists, the Orthodontic Module for Dental Assistants and the Business of Dentistry certificate program, many innovative and practice focused programs are offered each semester.

The CDE program collaborates with dental alumni and with societies, study clubs, and supply companies to bring outstanding CE programs to all of Alberta and beyond. Many professionals have also enjoyed the study abroad program as the CDE program has collaborated with international organizations in the Caribbean, Mexico, Germany, Greece, South America and the USA to provide quality CE in these beautiful and exotic locales.

Dental Intravenous Sedation Course
Taking Canada’s only accredited Continuing Education Sedation Program has paid off according to Dr. Long Tieu, a recent Doctor of Dental Surgery graduate, who took the course in the Fall of 2009.

Dr. Tieu just completed the Department of Dentistry’s General Practice residency. He’s has been offered several positions and believes it’s largely due to the intravenous conscious sedation program he took. “Having this course on my Circum Vitae (CV) separates me from the rest of the applicants.”

Dr. Tieu explained that one practice that’s taken him on wasn’t looking to take on another dentist but is specifically making room for him. “It’s a skill I can provide that a lot of people can’t. I feel very comfortable providing intravenous conscious sedation and look forward to using it.”
