Dr. Paul W. Major, BSc, DDS, Dip. Ortho., MSc
Program Director
BSc DDS MSc (Alberta), Professor of Dentistry (1987, 1996).

I completed my Doctorate of Dental Surgery (DDS) at the University of Alberta in 1980, graduating first in my class and receiving a gold medal for outstanding academic achievement. After four years of general dental practice, I entered the postgraduate Orthodontics Program at the University of Alberta. I completed the Diploma in Orthodontics and membership examinations of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada in 1986. Having developed a special interest in the biomechanics of the temporomandibular joints and clinical management of patients with temporomandibular disorders, I continued as a graduate student completing a MSc degree in 1988.

I accepted an academic appointment at the University of Alberta in 1989. In addition to my position in the Orthodontics Program, I was the Director of the Orofacial Pain Program from 1991-2001. Under my guidance, the only postgraduate MSc program in Orofacial Pain in Canada was initiated.

During my academic career, I have published 41 scientific publications, securing approximately $400,000 external research grant support and supervised the research of 44 graduate students. I have presented many lectures at national and international forums. I currently maintain a full-time academic appointment within the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry with rank of professor. In July 2001, I accepted the position of Director of the Graduate Orthodontic Program.

In addition to my academic duties, I maintain a busy part-time orthodontic private practice.

I am very excited about the future of our Graduate Orthodontic Program. Our clinic utilizes a private practice model, which enhances student experience and allows investment of clinic “profits” to enrich learning opportunities. The addition of the clinical PhD program elevates the scholarship of the entire Orthodontic Graduate Program.
