COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This Local Anaesthesia Continuing Education course has been approved by the Council of the College of Registered Dental Hygienists of Alberta (CRDHA). This self-study, interactive, and hands-on course, will teach participants to safely and effectively administer local anaesthetic agents. This course is based on the textbook, “Handbook of Local Anaesthesia, 5th Ed., by Dr. Stanley F. Malamed ISBN-13: 978-0-323-02449-5, and will review head and neck anatomy related to the administration of local anaesthetics, demonstrate the various techniques involved in local anaesthesia and explain patient evaluation, complications and office emergencies. Successful completion of the course will enable the CRDHA to issue a certificate recognizing that you have completed the course. This CRDHA certificate is required before you may administer local anaesthesia.
COURSE STRUCTURE:
To meet the potential need from the dental hygiene profession, yet recognize the need for appropriate class sizes, participants will be able to register for this course three times during the year; February, June and September.
- Withdrawal more than one week after the published course registration deadline is not eligible for refund, unless the withdrawal is due to medical conditions (must be requested in writing/email). If withdrawal is due to medical reasons, a letter from the participant’s physician is required. A participant may choose to withdraw entirely, in which case they would receive a refund of the fee amount minus a $200 withdrawal fee, which will be deducted from the original fee paid. Participants may also defer their registration once to the very next course offering for a transfer fee of $200 (should space be available). Should the participant then be unable to attend that future session, they would forfeit the entire fee amount. A written withdrawal request and a letter from the participant’s physician will be required, and the participant may either defer the registration to the following course, should space be available, or withdraw from the course for an administration fee.
-
Transfer
is permitted within the first week following the published course registration deadline. A transfer, one time only, to a future course will be allowed if there is sufficient space available in the next course intake. There is no guarantee space will be available. Transfer cannot be made to a course intake further in the future than the very next calendar intake for the course. Transfer requests must be in writing (email) to Continuing Dental Education, must include a $200 transfer fee, and are subject to any increase in tuition fees. Should the participant then be unable to attend that future session, they would forfeit the entire fee amount.
- Registered participants will then receive a mail out with the appropriate course materials (policies, cancellations, evaluations, self-tests, things to bring, etc.), and will need to purchase the textbook available at the University of Alberta bookstore for approximately $100.00 at (780) 492-4692. Please ensure that you contact the CDE office if you have not received your course materials at least three months prior to the course start date you are registered for.
- THIS COURSE BEGINS WITH A SELF-STUDY PERIOD of approximately three months during which participants are to prepare for the clinical course by reviewing the textbook and course manual. The clinical course will contain some review lectures but will not be sufficient on it’s own to prepare participants for the clinical course. Adequate study and preparation prior to attending the clinical course is expected of all participants.
CLINICAL SESSIONS:
- Four-day weekend clinical session (24 hours of continuing education credit is available)
- Comprised of a brief review of the textbook theory, clinical sessions with local anaesthetic administration to a partner, a written theory exam and a clinical examination.
- Participants will be required to bring some supplies and instruments.
- Due to participant’s varying interest in luncheon choices during such a course, no luncheons will be provided, but availability of food locations will be distributed.
