Dr. Clifford J. Revell, BSc, DDS, Cert. Perio., MSc
Dr. Revell received his BSc in 1966 and his DDS in 1970 from the University of Alberta. After acquiring his BSc in Oral Biology in 1973, he proceeded to play an active role in the field of periodontics until 1986 whereby he became President of the Alberta Academy of Periodontics. He is currently the President and Director of Perend Management Limited and Coordinator of the Dental Implant Program at the University of Alberta. Dr. Revell has been involved in numerous presentations, continuing education courses and study groups. At present his private practice is located in Edmonton, his satellite practices are in Fort McMurray and Grande Prairie, and he lectures/instructs on various Dental Implant courses.
 

 


 

Dr. Paul Schuller

Dr. Paul Schuller received his dental Undergraduate training and Post-Graduate specialty training in Periodontics from the University of Toronto. From 1971 to 1973 he was engaged as a Research Associate with the Royal Dental College in Copenhagen.

In 1976 he joined the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Alberta to head the Division of Periodontics.

During 1982 he was a Visiting Professor at the Dental Faculty of the University of Pacific, San Francisco and the Dental School, Loma Linda University, Loma Linda, California. In 1989, Dr. Schuller was invited as Visiting Professor in the Department of Periodontics, Escola Superior de Medicini Dentaria de Lisboa, University of Lisbon, Portugal.

Dr. Schuller is actively involved in periodontal education and research, having published numerous papers and delivered many local, national and international presentations. His research involves investigating and testing current periodontal treatment modalities as well as anti-bacterial and tissue response to consumer oral health products. He is fluent in both English and German.

Dr. Schuller continues to maintain an active part-time practice in the specialty of Periodontics and is involved in a Tele-dent Diagnostic Consulting Service.

Dr. Geoffrey Sperber
Dr. Geoffrey Sperber, B.Sc Hons, BDS, PhD, M.S., FIDC, Dr. Med Dent (h.c.)
Professor Emeritus
Born in Bloemfontein, South Africa. He graduated in Dentistry from the University of Witwatersrand in 1956. Research fellow at the University of Rochester from 1959 to 1961. Came to the University of Alberta in 1961 and was a full professor in Dentistry until 1996. Is now an emeritus professor and has been appointed as a Visiting Professor at the National University of Singapore, the University of Witwatersrand, University of Otago, the University of Manitoba, and the University of Rochester.

Dr. Sperber is the author of 6 books: Craniofacial Embryology (5 editions); Craniofacial Development; Morphology of Cheek Teeth of Early South African Hominids; Atlas of Radiographs of Early Man; From Apes to Angels; Craniofacial Embryogenetics and Development. He has also had 20 book chapters and 90 scientific articles published.

Dr. Sperber was elected a Foreign Associate of the Royal Society of South Africa in 1987, was named McCalla Research Professor at the University of Alberta for 1990-91, Distinguished Academician by the Academy of Medicine in Singapore in 1991, Fellow of the International College of Dentists in 1992, received the Award of Merit of the Canadian Dental Association in 2001, and awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the University of Witten-Herdecke, Germany, in 2002.  He was a Bulyea Cup Laureate in 2005.  He was appointed as the eponymus lecturer for the Bernard G. Sarnat Lectureship at UCLA in 2006.

He has memberships with the International Association for Dental Research, the American Association ofAnatomists, the Canadian Association of Physical Anthropologists, the Canadian Dental Association, the American Academy of the History of Dentistry, the American Cleft Palate Association, the American Society of Human Genetics, and the Craniofacial Genetics Society, of which he is the secretary. He is also a Section Editor for the Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Journal and is on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Dental Research.

Dr. Hank Tan
Dr. H-K. Tan, BDS, MSD
BDentSurg (Nat'l Taiwan), MSc (Washington), Associate Professor of Dentistry (1989, 1989).
Dr. Tan received his Master's degree and specialty training in Prosthodontics from the University of Washington in 1987. He joined the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Alberta in 1989. He is a full-time Associate Professor in the Department of Dentistry, the Chair of Removable Prosthodontics as well as a consultant to the General Practice Residence (GPR) program at the U of A Hospital Dental Clinic. In addition to his teaching and research commitments, he has maintained an active part-time prosthodontic practice since 1990.

Dr. Tan's research interests include testing of dental materials and loading conditions of removable dentures. His clinical expertise is in the treatment of comprehensive prosthetic cases using fixed and removable restorations, including implant-supported restorations.


Reena M Talwar, DDS PhD FRCD(C)

Discipline of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery

Dr. Reena Talwar completed her Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree from Case Western Reserve University in 1994 and went on to complete a General Practice Residency (GPR) at Loyola University Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois.
Dr. Talwar then became a research fellow in the Division of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Texas, Southwestern Medical Center, where she investigated and published the effects of open vs. closed treatment of bilateral condylar fractures on masticatory forces and function.


In 1997, she became a resident in a combined Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) residency program at Baylor College of Dentistry, a member of the Texas A&M University system, in Dallas, Texas.  Dr. Talwar’s PhD research involved cellular and molecular effects of 17-β Estradiol in a chondrocyte cell culture model, to evaluate the effects of hormones on cartilage as it relates to Temporomandibular Joint Disorders (TMD).   She was also involved in numerous clinical research projects as a resident in OMFS.


After completing her residency training, Dr. Talwar was an Assistant Professor in the Discipline of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Kentucky (UK).  She was involved in academic teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate residency program level at UK, as well as published research related to third molar extractions and trauma.


In 2005, Dr. Talwar became an Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto, Faculty of Dentistry in the Department of Biological and Diagnostic Sciences and at the Faculty of Medicine, in the Department of Anatomy.  She was the course director for Gross Anatomy and Head and Neck Anatomy from 2006 through 2010 at both the undergraduate (Dental) and graduate residency (OMFS, Endodontics, Anesthesia) levels, respectively.  During this period, she helped develop modern teaching modalities (i.e. Computer based 3-D anatomical model) for head and neck anatomy at the Faculty of Dentistry.  Dr. Talwar was also involved in academic teaching at the graduate residency level in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto.


In September2010,Dr. Talwar joined the Department of Dentistry at the University of Alberta as an Associate Professor (tenure-stream) in the discipline of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. Her primary focus as a new faculty member is to help support and develop research and teaching in the Department of Dentistry at the U of A.  Dr. Talwar is also a practicing clinician in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and plans to help develop a graduate level residency program in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Alberta. 
 

 



Dr. Norman M.R. Thie, BSc, MSc, DDS, MSc
Clinical Director
Dr. Thie completed his dental degree at the University of Western Ontario in 1996, after which he enjoyed private dental practice for approximately one year. He continued his interest in temporomandibular disorders and orofacial pain at the University of Alberta, where he completed the two-year postgraduate Temporomandibular disorders/Orofacial pain residency program. This culminated with Dr. Thie obtaining his second Masters Degree in Medical Sciences. His research and thesis examined temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis. Dr. Thie spent the subsequent year at the University of Montreal under the direction of Dr. Gilles Lavigne and received his certificate in Dental Medicine and Stomatology.

Dr. Thie is the Clinical Director, TMD/Orofacial Pain Clinic and Clinical Associate Professor, Department of Dentistry at the University of Alberta. In addition to his formal education, Dr. Thie has obtained Diplomate status with the American Board of Orofacial Pain and Fellowship status with the American Academy of Oral Medicine. He is a member of the American Academy of Orofacial Pain, the American Academy of Oral Medicine, the Canadian Pain Society, the International Association for the Study of Pain and the American Headache Society. Dr. Thie has published numerous peer-reviewed research articles. He remains active in clinical research while fulfilling his teaching responsibilities at the University of Alberta. He has an established private practice within Align Orthodontics focussing his expertise in diagnosis and treatment of temporomandibular disorders, orofacial pain, snoring and obstructive sleep apnea.


 
Terry K. Vankka D.M.D., F.R.C.D.(C)
Dr. Terry Vankka is a certified specialist in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. As a member of the Canadian Armed Forces, he is based in Edmonton and is currently fulfilling the role of oral and maxillofacial surgeon for the western region. In addition, he has been actively participating in private practice since joining Kingsway Oral Surgery in November 2000.

Terry, a native of Kamloops, British Columbia, commenced his undergraduate training at the University of British Columbia in 1974. He graduated with honours from the UBC Faculty of Dentistry in 1981 and received awards in both prosthodontics and pediatric dentistry. Upon graduation, he was awarded membership in the OKU Dental Fraternity and recognized by the UBC Dental Alumni Association for his extracurricular work with the Dental Undergraduate Society.

Terry started his career in dentistry as a dental officer with the Canadian Armed Forces in Halifax. In 1984, he left the military and worked as a solo practitioner in Kamloops. He maintained a full scope dental practice with hospital privileges until 1990 when he re-enrolled with the CF. Following postings to Cold Lake, St. Hubert and Belgium (NATO), he began post-graduate residency training in oral and maxillofacial surgery at the Texas Medical Center in Houston in 1996. Prior to graduation, he successfully completed the RCDC specialty examinations and was awarded his Fellowship in September 2000.

Since his arrival in Edmonton, Terry has become a member of several professional organizations. In addition to the Alberta Dental Association and College, these include the Canadian Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the Royal College of Dentists of Canada, the Alberta Society of Dental Specialists, the Alberta Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and the medical staff at the Royal Alexandra Hospital.

Terry, his lovely wife Anne and their three children have comfortably settled in Edmonton. In conjunction with a busy family life, Terry enjoys curling, golf and downhill skiing.


 

 

 

 

Dr. Tyler V. Verhaeghe, BMSc, DDS
Dr. Verhaeghe is a graduate of the University of Alberta Dental School. He is currently pursuing his Masters in Health Sciences Education at the University of Alberta. He is also currently on staff in the Division of Restorative Dentistry with an interest in Removable Prosthodontics for which he is Co-Course Coordinator of the Complete and Partial Denture Laboratories.


Dr. James Yacyshyn
Dr. James R. Yacyshyn, BSc, DDS, MASc
Director, Continuing Dental Education
Dr. Yacyshyn is a graduate of the University of Alberta Dental School. He has since completed a Masters degree in Engineering, specializing in information technology, at the University of Toronto. He is currently on staff in the Department of Dentistry and will be overseeing all continuing education courses, courses at sea, telehealth initiatives and in-house "Brown Bag Lunch" seminars. Dr. Yacyshyn brings with him expertise in health informatics and distance learning and has also been hired to coordinate the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry's health informatics initiatives, as well as working in collaboration with the Alberta Research Council.
 



Dr. Donald C. Yu, BS, DMD, CAGS, MScD, MRCD(C), FAGD, FADI, FAAPM

Donald C. Yu attracts numerous dentists and dental auxiliaries each year. His lecturing experience includes conferences, seminars, conventions, study clubs, table clinics, special programs, dental school programs and dental assistant programs. A dynamic seminar leader who captivates his audience with a clear, understandable presentation full of excellent ideas, facts, techniques and figures.

Dr. Yu has delivered many presentations and participation courses at various state, provincial, regional, national and international conferences for different organizations such as American Dental Association, Canadian Dental Associations, Academy of General Dentistry, Yankee Dental Congress, Federation Dentaire Internationale, etc.

He is a member of Canadian Dental Association, Canadian Academy of Endodontics, Royal College of Dentists in Canada, American Association of Endodontists, Alberta Dental Association, Alberta Society of Endodontists, Edmonton and District Dental Society, Edmonton Multidisciplinary Dental Study Club. He is a Fellow of Academy of General Dentistry and Academy of Dentistry International.

He is a member of Canadian Dental Association, Canadian Academy of Endodontics, Royal College of Dentists in Canada, American Association of Endodontists, Alberta Dental Association, Alberta Society of Endodontists, Edmonton and District Dental Society, Edmonton Multidisciplinary Dental Study Club. He is a Fellow of Academy of General Dentistry and Academy of Dentistry International.

He received his D.M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania, and holds a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study in Endodontics, Master of Dental Science in Endodontics from Boston University.

Dr. Yu is the Clinical Professor and Director of the Endodontics Program, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta and currently is a visiting faculty member of Boston University. He is a guest lecturer of the Dental Assisting Program at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology.
