- Calgary Dental General Practice Residency
An elective one-year Postgraduate Residency in General Dentistry. Applicants must have received, or be in the final year of a course of study leading to a Doctorate in Dental Surgery (DDS)/Doctorate in Dental Medicine (DMD) or equivalent from an accredited program.
About the Edmonton GPR Program
Dental residents broaden their knowledge of medical and dental interactions through formal rotations in emergency medicine and anesthesia. On-going rounds and seminars, in multiple disciplines and venues, occur throughout the year.
Application deadline - October 8, 2012.
Program Overview
Seminars are provided in many dental specialty areas (endodontics, oral & maxillofacial surgery, pedodontics, periodontics, prosthodontics, sedation & anaesthesia).
Residents may attend any of the didactic programs of the Department of Dentistry Continuing Education Division at no charge through the year.
Certification in I.V. conscious sedation is usually offered to the residents as a component of the program.
Remuneration of the dental residents is at the same level as year 1 Postgraduate Medical and Surgical residents (approximately $54,857 for 2012-2013); a package of employment benefits is included, and two weeks of vacation time is available during the twelve month contract. The dental service operates a walk-in Emergency Dental Clinic 365 days per year (four hours every evening, plus afternoon shifts on week-ends and holidays). Dental residents are afforded opportunity to work in this clinic, and are remunerated separately for doing so.
Completion of the residency does not provide subsequent access to full licensure from the Alberta Dental Association and College. For questions regarding pathways to licensure in the Province of Alberta, please contact the Registrar of the Alberta Dental Association and College directly.
Application Process
Applications are accepted until beginning to mid October each year for placement in the program July 1 the following year. In-person interviews are conducted with the short-listed applicants in November.
Selection is completed at the end of November.
Interested applicants are encouraged to visit Edmonton to meet our staff and current residents, and to tour the facilities available at any time throughout the year.
