Dentistry Research

Dr. Tarek El-Bialy has discovered that this ultrasound can stimulate lower jaw growth especially in patients with craniofacial problems like Hemifacial Microsomia. Usually these patients have to undergo many surgeries during their lives. This new device will be expected to improve many unsolved problems in Dentistry and Craniofacial areas. A provisional patent has been filed based on this research as well as the awarded grant. More details about this research can be found at the following website http://myprofile.cos.com/telbialy

For the second time in UA history, our research team has awarded an NSERC (I2I)[Idea to Innovation] grant to miniaturize a small ultrasound device for stimulating teeth healing and dental tissue formation. This team includes in addition to Dr. Tarek El-Bialy (in the Orthodontic Graduate program and Biomedical Engineering), Drs. Jie Chen and Ying Tsui from the Electrical Engineering department. When it was published by Dr. Tarek El-Bialy at the American Journal of Orthodontics for the first time in History that new dental tissue can be reformed after the teeth are grown, this research team and patent was planned for.

Dental Hygiene Research

The Dental Hygiene Program is among the leaders in dental hygiene research. Our research generates new knowledge and advancement which in turn supports all aspects of dental hygiene practice.

The dental hygiene program is investigating many new research directions:

  • developing new frameworks for defining dental hygiene practice
  • identifying the unique oral health needs of Albertans
  • developing innovative health promotion programs
  • evaluating new technologies for dental hygiene practice

Cranio-facial & Oral-health Evidence-based Practice Group (COEPG)

One of the current lines of research in our program is evidence-based orthodontics. It is amazing to realize that a large part of our current knowledge in orthodontics is empirical and circumstantial. Following the trend initiated in medicine years ago, a progressive number of new evidence-based reviews continue to appear in orthodontic literature. more...

Pediatric Dentistry Research - Healthy Smiles, Healthy Children

Maryam Amin is an Assistant Professor and head of the division of pediatric dentistry. Dr. Amin has been involved for most of her academic career with the oral health needs of young children - as a teacher, a researcher, and a practitioner. She has established a research program at the University of Alberta with the ultimate goal of improvement of children’s oral health in vulnerable populations. The mission of this research program is to improve the oral health of children through collaborations directed at prevention, education, treatment and advocacy. The vision of this program is that through collaborations and partnerships, all children of our community will enter school ready to learn and pain free. The collaborators of this research program are community organizations such as Multicultural Health Brokers Coop and Bent Arrow Traditional Healing Society, Community-University Partnership for the study of children, youth and families (CUP), Alberta Health Services (AHS), and Alberta Employment & Immigration (AE&I), and Women and Children Health Research Institute (WCHRI).

Current research projects:

  1. “Dental Health Needs of New Immigrant and Refugee Children.” This project is a collaboration with Multicultural Health Brokers Coop (MCHBC), an agency based in Edmonton that provides outreach to approximately 1500 immigrant and refugee families from 16 different communities. The main objective of this research is to improve the oral health-related quality of life of young new immigrant and refugee children in Alberta by exploring parents’ beliefs and attitudes regarding their children's oral heath and their perceived barriers to the use of existing services as well as identifying the oral health status of young new immigrant and refugee children and the extent of current dental health/supports for these vulnerable populations in Edmonton. Alberta Health Services and Alberta Employment & Immigration have pledged their commitment to collaborate with this project and use findings to provide stronger links between their current programs and hard-to-reach communities.

  2. “Oral Health of Urban Aboriginal Children” A collaboration with the Bent Arrow Traditional Healing Society, an Aboriginal organization. The study involves young Aboriginal children. Women and Children Health Research Institute (WCHRI) at the University of Albert is supporting this project.

  3. “Social Determinants of Early Childhood Caries in Two Métis Settlements in Northern Alberta” A graduate student research project that explores the oral health of young children living in 2 Métis settlements, Kikino and Buffalo Lake. This project is exploring the social determinants of oral health of their young children. He will be qualitatively interviewing the local health providers, the elders and parents of young children.

  4. “Caries Relapse after a Comprehensive Dental Treatment under General Anesthesia for Early Childhood Caries.” A retrospective study conducted in collaboration with a private dental practice with general anesthetic facilities in Edmonton. The objectives were to explore the relapse rate up to 3 years after a comprehensive dental treatment under general anesthesia for early childhood caries and to identify the factors that influence the relapse rate.

  5. “Students’ Views on Problem-Based Learning in Dental Education: A Qualitative Research.” The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the views of dental students about the use of PBL and their thoughts on how to improve this teaching and learning modality in dental education.

  6. “Past Diet of a Greek Population Using Isotopic Analysis of Dentin of Deciduous Teeth.” A pilot study on exploring the appropriateness/safety of using a new technology of isotopic analysis of dentin on modern baby teeth conducted in collaboration with the department of anthropology.

  7. “A Model for Collaborative Assessment and Intervention for Maltreated Infants and Young Children: A Pilot Project.” This study is a collaboration with Drs. Gail Andrew and Carole Anne Hapchyn). This study will be looking into abused and neglected children. The oral health aspect of this project will be conducted by the division of pediatric dentistry.

  8. Oral Health and Quality of Life in 5 to 14 Year Old Children: An International study.” the objectives of this US-based cross-national study are to explore the relationship between oral health and quality of life in 5 to 14 year old children and to identify the role that oral health promotion efforts in the children’s families and in their schools can play in this context. The Canadian arm of this research will be done by Dr. Amin and her research team.

  9. “Community Service Learning: An Educational Transformation for Global Health" The purpose of this pilot project is to design and implement a CSL course for dental students, and to assess the impact of the course on students' attitudes towards disparities in healthcare and the needs of vulnerable people.
