Satellite Dental Clinics

 Print this page

The overall objective of the Satellite Dental Clinic program is to bridge the gap between the discipline based educational environment and the independent environment of a dental practice. The program is designed to allow the students to make more independent judgements concerning comprehensive care in conjunction with both Department policy and the particular needs of the patient, and be more individually responsible for such actions. The students will have the opportunity to provide services to segments of the population (in High Level, La Crete and/or McLennan) who do not routinely receive dental care and consequently present with higher levels of oral disease. In addition, more complex treatment cases than previously seen in the school will be encountered. Not only will the student see a greater severity of dental disease, he/she will be able to treat a larger number of patients in a day.

Specifically the objectives are:
  • to have the dental and dental hygiene student provide evidence-based comprehensive dental care for patients in underserviced areas,
  • to have the student become more confident in his/her own ability as a clinician by having greater responsibility for his/her own actions,
  • to have the students recognize the health needs of patients in underserviced communities and understand the reasons for these needs,
  • to facilitate student experience with professional and interpersonal relationships between dentists, allied dental professionals and patients,
  • to introduce and encourage dental and dental hygiene graduates to evaluate the possibility of establishing practices in a rural community.
